Gary Robert Young was arrested on August 5, 2020 and charged with two cold case rapes in Chandler, Arizona. On November 8, 1991, a 26-year-old woman was kidnapped and raped at gunpoint. In 1992, a 15-year-old girl was kidnapped, driven to a nearby home, and sexually assaulted there.
A DNA profile of the suspect was obtained from the victims’ sexual assault kits. This linked the cases together in CODIS, but there was no hit to a potential perpetrator.
The FGG investigation was conducted by Colleen Fitzpatrick of Identifinders. Initial confirmation was made through police surveillance followed by surreptitious sampling. The investigation was funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s Sexual Assault Kit Initiative.
Young is being held in custody while the case against him is pending in Maricopa County Superior Court.
