James Wayne Ingersoll, 50, was arrested on May 4, 2023 by the Charlotte-Mecklenberg Police Depart and charged with two sexual assaults that took place in 1994 and 2010.
The first victim was a 39-year-old woman who was attacked in her home on June 17, 1994 at 1:30 am. An unknown male broke into her residence, threatened her with a knife, and sexually assaulted her. A DNA profile of the suspect was obtained from the victim’s sexual assault kit.
The second victim, 25, was assaulted in Columbia, South Carolina on March 13, 2010, near the University of South Carolina. A DNA profile of the suspect was developed from the victim’s sexual assault kit, which was entered into CODIS. The cases were linked together through CODIS, but there were no hits to the offender’s profile. The funding was provided by the National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative.
The FGG investigation was conducted by Othram in partnership with the Charlotte-Mecklenberg Police Department and the Columbia Police Department, beginning in 2022.
Ingersoll was arrested in Concord, North Carolina. He will face charges of first-degree rape and first-degree burglary in the Meckelnburg County Superior Court.
He will be charged in Columbia, South Carolina with first-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping. As Ingersoll has refused to waive extradition, an extradition warrant from the governor’s office will need to be obtained.
