Spencer Monnett was arrested on July 28, 2018 and charged in the April 17, 2018 sexual assault of 79-year-old Carla Brooks in St. George, Utah. Monnett broke into Brooks’ home through a screen door, stuffed a rag into her mouth and sexually assaulted and beat her as she fought back. Brooks has been publicly identified at her own request; she now advocates on behalf of sexual assault survivors and has pushed for funding to test backlogged sexual assault kits.
A DNA profile was developed from Brooks’ sexual assault kit but produced no matches in law enforcement databases. The FGG investigation was undertaken by Parabon Nanolabs.
Monnett confessed to the crime and he has pled guilty. Brooks testified at his sentencing hearing, at which she forgave him and urged him to turn his life around. Brooks went on to spend the last years of her life advocating for victims of sexual assault. She passed away on October 26, 2022 in South Jordan, Utah.
