On July 9, 2021, the Sexual Assault Investigative Unit Cold Case Team charged Thomas Craig Brodie for a May 4, 1991 home invasion rape in Calgary, Alberta. After an evening drinking at a Calgary strip club, an intruder broke into the home of a woman known in court records only as DG. He broke a basement window and came up the stairs, with his face covered up by his t-shirt, and said to the victim, “I want to f—k you, bitch.” The 28-year-old victim ran from the intruder, locked a door, and phoned 911. The 911 call, played in court, discloses that the victim was heard screaming before the call was disconnected. The victim was brutally assaulted, punched repeatedly in the head, and raped twice while her 18-month-old baby slept upstairs. The intruder wiped down his fingerprints before leaving.
A DNA profile of the suspect was obtained from a sexual assault kit taken at the hospital, but there were no leads. There is no information at this time on who performed the FGG investigation.
Brodie lived near the victim at the time of the attack, and he matched a description the victim provided to police. Brodie, who was 18 years old at the time of the attack has no criminal record. He is described as having led an “unassuming life,” and went on to have a family of his own.
Brodie pled guilty to breaking and entering and sexual assault on December 16, 2021, in the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench in Calgary. In October of 2022, he was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment.
